When looking for good quality Asian food in Manuka, it is good advice to overlook busy Franklin Street. Instead, head to the quieter Furneaux Street, where you will find Abell’s Kopi Tiam. Serving a modern style of Chinese and Malay cuisine, this bright and friendly little restaurant has been doing a consistently solid trade since it opened its doors ten years ago. Owners Abell Ong and Lorna Sim have managed to combine the tastes of their Malaysian and Chinese origins with an array of unique and innovative dishes and offer them on a menu that also features traditional favourites. The formula at Abell's Kopi Tiam has proven so popular that booking ahead is advisable even on the quieter nights. The dining room is colourful and informal and there is ample seating outside for those wishing to dine al fresco. That said, the food is what this place packs them in for, and the menu is exemplified by dishes such as "My mum's laksa", bee hoon noodles with coconut curry flavours and served with chicken or seafood – one of the best in town; or sand whiting, tempura battered and accompanied by a nashi pear salad. Tofu is crisp fried and comes with a sweet chilli and peanut sauce; and crispy skinned chicken may be served with coriander and a soy dipping sauce. Finish with a black sticky rice pudding and you will truly feel satisfied.
