A daily procession of office truants in search of a coffee fix, movie buffs and a lively crowd of after-work drinkers, are all lured by the extensive menu, well stocked bar and great coffee. The menu at Babar features a solid choice of café style meals which include an interesting pizza selection — diners can choose something as simple as the Pesto, with tomato, pesto and bocconcini, to a more involved affair like the Seafood, with prawns, mussels, calamari, roquet lettuce and lemon aioli. Pasta and risotto are well represented as are salads and bread products such as club sandwiches or BLTs. Further up the food chain, one can choose a beef and guinness pie, osso bucco, or lamb dansahk. Steak can be a char-grilled rump with garden salad, fries and a red wine jus, or a New York sirloin with dijon mustard sauce, fries and a salad. The brightly lit cake display continues the tradition of featuring an amazing selection of house-made sweets, synonymous with the Babar name. Their signature cakes are cute little single serves such as blueberry or mars bar cheesecake; a warm sticky date pudding; or one of the many chocolate truffles. To complement the regular breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, light snacks are available all day. For those that may be venturing into Canberra’s southern suburbs, Babar’s Woden establishment opens seven days a week, with a unique breakfast menu on weekends.
