With views over Bougainville Street and a welcome atmosphere, Jewel of India is considered one of the more genteel destinations serving authentic Indian cuisine in Canberra. With beautifully presented slow cooked standards and a banquet menu of unlimited serves, the menu at Jewel of India certainly delivers. Scorching southern flavours and the north's aromatic fare are given equal standing by owner Venkatesh Ramachandran. A fiery, yet flavoursome, Vindaloo is his hallmark. "It's not tongue-burning hot," he explains. "It's a head rush that comes from a mix of aromatic and heated spices". Kadhai dishes – wok fried and served on a sizzling platter – are also popular, stealing the scene every time they're served. Of course, the menu includes a variety of choices, including mild curries for those who prefer to protect their taste buds, scores of vegetarian delights and Tandoori breads baked to order. Plus, any dish can be adapted to suit special diets or individual tastes. Australian wines are available, along with Indian beers, such as Kingfisher and Taj Mahal.
