On any given day, one can find simple and elegant dishes put together well at Du Jour, in Canberra’s newest dining precinct. Artisan breads and pastries, and a pleasing European influenced yet modern selection is on offer here. The Du Jour philosophy is simple. Fresh made and uncomplicated flavours rule the roost here in line with owner and chef Chris Ross' desire to get to the root of good cooking. It all begins at the source for Chris, and he continues to seek out quality produce in the local area to offer to his patrons. Local free range eggs were chosen for his pastries and breakfasts only after he inspected the farms himself, and his sourdough took ten weeks to establish its character before he used it in his breads. The food here may be described as modern Australian but certainly draws more from Europe than Asia. Plates are medleys of two or three things matched well rather than overly fussy, and ingredient is king. Confit duck salad is a generous starter of a crispy duck leg atop poached pear slices and rocquette, asparagus and a poached egg; crispy skin snapper fillet comes with prawns and spaghetti, in a light seafood and herb broth; New York cut is a hearty sirloin topped with a mushroom bavaroise, accompanied by a confit potato and fresh tomato salad. Sweets are a cut above as the tassie de chocolat may testify: warm flourless chocolate pudding is served with vanilla cream and is divine with warm ganache poured over. A modest but well rounded wine list features South and Western Australian wines along with choice whites from New Zealand and a couple of good locals. A comfortable and interesting dining room is complemented by ample outdoor seating in the beautiful courtyard at New Acton.
