Since opening its doors in 2006, Alto has made a point of redefining the concept of the revolving restaurant and has gained a solid following from locals and visitors alike. Here is a restaurant that delivers a dining experience to match the sensational view, and certainly suggests that one is far better off seeing the sights at dinnertime with a delicious meal and a perfect glass of wine, rather than jostling with the masses during the day. Clean lines and minimalist white décor hint that modern sophistication now reigns in the lofty heights of Black Mountain, and the food confirms it. Chef Noel Phear delivers a modern Australian menu with innovative European influences. Lamb rump is butter roasted and served with a minted vegetable ratatouille and veal jus; pork and pistachio terrine is served with a black sesame and date relish, micro herb salad and house baked lavosh; and dessert may be a saffron and citrus semifreddo with almond tuile biscuit and honey comb. The extensive wine list features a solid selection of local, regional and international wines as well as some sumptuous sparklings and champagnes. Maitre d' and co-owner Mickey Gubas leads the knowledgeable, friendly and unpretentious staff in creating the perfect combination of culinary and visual bliss.
